Course Description:


This course is designed to provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary for compliance with NFPA 10 Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code: 9.7.4.1 et seq., NFPA 1961 Standard on Fire Hoses, NFPA 1962 Standard For The Care, Use, and Service Testing of Fire Hose Including Couplings and Nozzles, and the Louisiana Department of Public Safety, Office of State Fire Marshal: LAC 55:v.Chapter 30.

This course will review national standards, local and state laws associated with fire extinguisher service and maintenance and hose testing.This course is designed to teach some of the basic rules of the life safety & property protection profession through better understanding of how to locate information needed to complete tasks properly. Students will also perform hands-on training with both portable fire extinguishers and fire hose.

Development of this course was in response to the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal Life Safety and Property Protection Committee’s request to train and certify those persons desiring a technical endorsement to work in the Life Safety and Property Protection Industry.

  • 10 student minimum
  • Must be able to supply a classroom location
  • Outdoor faucet hook-up

Class Information:


It is recommended that students bring pen/pencil, highlighter, paper, and some type of work gloves (leather recommended).

Proper attire must be worn at all times during the class. Long pants shall be worn at all times. T-shirts are permitted to be worn, permitted the shirt is full length (no cut-off shirts) and has a full sleeve. (Long- sleeved shirts are recommended) Tank tops are not to be worn. Open toed shoes are not permitted (safety toes are not required).

All students should be in good health and must be willing to submit to medical monitoring by FETA staff. Medical monitoring will be discussed on the opening morning of the class.
